MFU treatment theory
MFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target the layers of skin just below the surface. The ultrasound energy causes small amounts of thermal damage to the tissue, which stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps give skin its structure and elasticity.
MFU treatments can target different depths of the skin:
Superficial Dermis
- Treatments can target this layer to improve skin texture and fine lines.
Deep Dermis and Subcutaneous Tissue
- At these depths, the primary target is structural and supportive tissue. The heat from the ultrasound promotes the contraction and tightening of the tissue, which can lead to a lifting effect over time
The key to MFU’s effectiveness is its ability to initiate collagen remodeling without damaging the outer layers of the skin. As the targeted tissue heals, new collagen forms, and the skin gradually becomes firmer and more toned. This process can take several months, with improvements continuing to appear during this time.

Advantages of MFU over RF and laser
1. Depth of Penetration:
- MFU: Delivers ultrasound energy precisely to pre-determined depths (usually between 1.5mm to 4.5mm) below the skin’s surface without affecting the outer layers of skin. This allows for targeted treatment of deeper skin tissues and the SMAS layer (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System), which is key in lifting and tightening.
- RF: Generally heats both the superficial and deeper layers of skin but with less precision in depth control compared to MFU. This can sometimes lead to less consistent results in deeper tissue tightening.
- Laser: Primarily affects the superficial layers of the skin. While some newer lasers can reach mid-dermal levels, they do not typically engage the deeper structural tissues as effectively as MFU.
Collagen and Elastin Stimulation:
- MFU: The high-intensity ultrasound energy creates thermal coagulation points at specific depths, leading to intense collagen production and significant lifting over time. The energy triggers a healing response that builds new collagen and strengthens existing fibers.
- RF: Promotes collagen production by heating the dermis, though the heating is less targeted compared to MFU. The results can be more variable and typically not as profound in terms of lifting and firming.
- Laser: Excellent for surface textural improvements, pigmentation, and superficial collagen remodeling, but does not significantly impact deep collagen structures like MFU.
Longevity of Results:
- MFU: Results develop gradually over 2-3 months as new collagen forms and can last for up to a year or more.
- RF: Results are progressive as well, though they may not be as durable or dramatic as those achieved with MFU.
- Laser: Surface improvements are immediate and can be quite dramatic, especially with ablative lasers, but deeper structural improvements are less enduring.
Non-Surgical Lifting:
- MFU: Recognized for its non-invasive lifting capabilities, particularly of the neck, chin, and brow. It is often referred to as a non-surgical facelift.
- RF and Laser: While both can offer tightening effects, they are generally not as effective as MFU in providing a noticeable lift, especially in the lower face and neck areas.
Safety and Skin Types:
- MFU: Safe for all skin types as the ultrasound bypasses the surface layers of the skin, reducing the risk of surface damage like burns or pigmentation changes.
- RF: Also safe for all skin types, though care must be taken to avoid overheating the skin surface.
- Laser: Certain types of laser treatments are not suitable for darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation and burns.
Recovery and Downtime:
- MFU: Typically involves minimal to no downtime. Patients may experience slight redness or swelling, but this usually subsides within a few hours to a day.
- RF: Generally low downtime, similar to MFU, though experiences can vary based on the intensity of the treatment.
- Laser: Can require several days to weeks of downtime, especially for more intensive ablative treatments that require healing of the skin surface.
